Because they generate a great deal of media attention, it can seem as if the likelihood of a violent attack at work (particularly a homicidal one) is high. But in truth they are relatively rare. The issue is that when they do happen, they can be devastating. That is why we need to prepare.
Why do they happen? The reasons are as varied as we are. Violence may be motivated by revenge, robbery, religion, or radical ideology. It may be tied to past events beyond your knowledge or understanding. These things are important to learn for prevention from future attacks, but in the event of an actual threat they don’t matter much. What matters is to remember the lessons reviewed here.
Keep in mind too, that workplace safety is not something that matters only when you’re on the job. You may be off duty, running errands, enjoying yourself at a restaurant or theater, even away on vacation. Whatever the reason, from time to time you’re going to find yourself in somebody else’s workplace and they might be having a very bad day. Tragedy can occur anywhere, any time. So prepare yourself mentally with steps to take, which you will find on the next page.
