When individuals feel that unpleasant or negative circumstances are beyond their control, they tend to exhibit a number of physical and emotional problems, as did Jessica. Her supervisors needed to resist the temptation to become her counselor or therapist ― which would introduce moral and possibly legal issues ― and, other than encouraging her to seek professional help, had to focus solely on her job performance. If they did not handle the situation well, Jessica’s coworkers might also have slipped into an attitude of helplessness (“This situation is never going to change”) and become disengaged as well. They in turn could become poor performers or possibly even quit to find a better work environment.

To reiterate what was covered in the onboarding section earlier in this course: Hire the best employees, without compromise. It is not worth your time and money to attempt to train an employee who will not follow, or does not believe in, the leadership’s vision. Also, when you feel that an employee must be watched, or micromanaged, or repeatedly disciplined, as difficult as it may be, it’s time to find somebody else for that position.
